The Light of Bhutan

After School Vidya Jyothi – light of education

This just in from one of CBN’s Field Directors for India where OP has made an investment to help the children of Bhutan.

Dr. Rajesh writes -

12-year old Ajit Rai wakes up to the sounds of his father’s loud yelling at his mother. Ajit tries to console his 10-year old sister who starts crying hearing the screams of fear.

This is not uncommon at his home at Gurung Basti in Pasaka Region district of South Bhutan. His home life is filled with conflict, chaos and bewilderment. His father is unemployed and mother works as a daily wage laborer to make ends meet. To escape from the pains of poverty, Ajit’s father turns to alcohol which in turn has a devastating effect on the children.

Ajit and Payal cherishes the dream of studying and becoming a Doctor and a Teacher. But the stressful environment at home makes this very difficult. With no peace at home and no proper guidance for schooling, it looked like they had no where to go and no one to turn to.

This is not just the story of Ajit and Payal. There are so many other children suffering in silence cherishing the dream of going to school. But parents are unable to hear their children’s cries. Working for long hours in extreme industrial conditions, they turn to alcohol to find relief. Their hard-earned money is spent on the destruction of their own physical and mental health, and the family suffers.

Orphan’s Promise heard their silent cries and started an evening school program, Vidya Jyothi – light of education in Pasaka Region. This program was launched to help the children of Pasaka Region with their studies every evening. On all weekdays, they come to the center and study for two hours under the guidance of Mr. Stephen, a local Teacher. Ajit and Payal were among the first ones to attend the classes at Vidya Jyothi. They found Vidya Jyothi a place of solace, away from the harsh and brutal realities of life. Here at Vidya Jyothi center, they have a place to study, do their homework and prepare for their exams. Teacher and other volunteers are always available to talk to them, counsel them and to help them to deal with their everyday situations.

Now, Ajit and Payal along with 18 other children of Pasaka region are so excited to be able to get the education they always dreamed of. Orphan’s Promise Vidya Jyothi Staff is encouraging and helping Ajit and Payal to excel in their studies. With a renewed hope, they work hard to reach the goal of their lives – Doctor and Teacher.

Through Vidya Jyothi project, Orphan’s Promise is making all the efforts to guide and support the children with necessary school supplies and to encourage them to have a better future.

A small beginning for a great future in the land of Bhutan. May God bless this endeavour of CBN’s Orphans Promise to bear much fruit in the days to come.
